This ritual is necessary when there is an untimely and unnatural death in the family. The Moksha Narayan Bali ritual and its importance are mentioned in the Garuda Purana. References can also be found in Padma Purana and Skandh Purana.
Any unfulfilled desire of the deceased member of the family might bother the relatives and other members of the family. The ritual/puja helps in liberating souls and assists them in obtaining Moksha.

Pitru Dosha
Any sin or bad karma committed by the ancestors of a person will result in problems and obstacles to the person and their family. The Dosha is reflected by a specific positioning of planets in the horoscope of the person.
